VW has contracted its Braunschweig plant to produce ‘up to 500,000 EV battery packs per year’
German automaker Volkswagen (VW) has revealed in a recent announcement that it has efforts underway to produce ‘up to 500,000 EV battery packs per year’ at its Braunschweig plant.
The disclosure by VW implies that the automaker has a notable EV effort ongoing with its new MEB platform that supports a number of new EV models, presently called the I.D. electric vehicles, which the company plans to bring to the market in 2020. Volkswagen faced major blow to its reputation due to dieselgate scandal and the company is trying to change its image by putting in more effort and money on cleaner vehicles.
The Braunschweig plant dates back to 1938; and it is VW’s oldest manufacturing plant. In recent times, the manufacturing specialization of the plant has extended to the production of battery systems, suspension parts, and contemporary electromechanical steering systems.
According to the details shared by the VW brand CEO Herbert Diess via the recent announcement, the company has contracted its Braunschweig plant for a planned yearly production of around 500,000 EV battery packs. The move is a result of an agreement between the VW Management Board, the management at the Braunschweig plant, and the worker’s council.
Highlighting the fact that the battery system is a fundamental part of an EV, Diess said: “We bundle the expertise for this important technology for the whole of Europe in Braunschweig.” Diess also asserted that VW is doing its best to ensure that EVs of the future are developed and produced in Germany.
