Volvo’s first fully electric car will be a version of XC40
According to a recent confirmation by Swedish automaker Volvo’s design chief Thomas Ingenlath, the first fully electric car to be launched by the brand will be an electric version of the XC40. Ingenlath also said that Volvo will be launching an electric variant of the next-generation XC90 later.
The confirmation, about Volvo’s electric vehicle plans in the coming years, has come from Ingenlath during a recent event marking the unveiling of the new S60 sports saloon.
Going by the information shared by Ingenlath, the launch of the Volvo XC40 fully electric car will come after the 2019-scheduled launch of the second electric car by the automaker’s Polestar sub-brand. Thereafter, the XC40 will be launched; followed by the launch of the electric version of the XC90, likely in 2021. The XC90 will be manufactured at Volvo's new factory in Charleston.
With regard to Volvo’s electric-vehicle strategy for the future, Ingenlath said the automaker plans to manufacture electric versions of its existing cars, instead of building a line-up of completely new electric-only models.
Talking about Volvo’s “masterplan” for bringing electrification to its product range, Ingenlath specifically asserted: “We will not establish products beside our hybrids, we will introduce electrification as a powertrain variant within the existing portfolio.”
