Tesla tells Bloomberg that Model 3 body line is now almost fully automated
After Tesla’s most recent Model 3 production shutdown for adding a new production line, the automaker recently invited a Bloomberg team to its manufacturing plant in Fremont, to have a look at the Model 3 production line.
Based on the visit, a recent Bloomberg article largely recapitulates the information which has already been disclosed earlier by Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk. This information chiefly pertains to the issues faced by Tesla Motors with Model 3 battery module production and the conveyor system which required replacement.
In addition, Bloomberg has also mentioned in the article that Tesla has revealed that the Model 3 body line is now almost fully automated. Tesla specifically told Bloomberg that “the Model 3 body line is now 95 percent automated, including the transfer, loading, and welding of parts.”
With the body line being one of the most complex parts of a vehicle’s manufacturing process after general assembly, the disclosure by Tesla implies that the automaker is apparently aiming at automation across the different parts of the Model 3 production process.
Along with learning about Tesla’s full automation of the Model 3 body line, the Bloomberg team also took a look at Tesla’s quality control for Model 3. Bloomberg has revealed that the quality control process included the scanning of the Model 3 bodies by 47 robots at 1,900 different points, for ensuring that the vehicle matches the design specifications with a 0.15 millimeter precision.
