Tesla patents two new inventions for making battery packs safer and more fire-resistant
US electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors has recently patented two new battery-related inventions. The inventions patented by Tesla underscore new ways which the automaker has developed for making battery packs of electric vehicles safer and more fire-resistant.
The new patents indicate Tesla’s ongoing efforts to improve the battery packs used in its vehicles. The efforts are noteworthy because even though -- going by the statistics -- the incidents of battery fires involving Tesla vehicles are quite rare as compared to gas-powered car fires, Tesla wants to ensure that battery fires are not a cause of worry for the owners of electric vehicles.
Battery fires end up releasing a significant amount of energy because when one or more battery cells of a battery pack catch fire, the fire gets spread to several other nearby cells as well. The considerable chain reaction in case of battery fires can last for hours, and can involve thousands of cells in a battery pack.
The new inventions which have been patented by Tesla are primarily associated with the management of the release of gas after the failure of battery cells inside a battery module, along with a new way in which a battery pack fire can be terminated more effectively.
According to the information shared by Tesla, the company is essentially patenting a mechanism for injecting a “thermal-control liquid” inside a battery pack during a fire incident, to enable first responders to easily address a fire in its electric vehicles in the future.
