Tesla and SpaceX jointly developing new advanced materials for use by both companies
According to recent reports, Tesla and SpaceX -- two seemingly unrelated companies spearheaded by billionaire Elon Musk -- are teaming up for the creation of new raw materials to be used by both the companies.
The efforts of Tesla and SpaceX are reportedly focused on developing new raw materials which can potentially be used for the manufacturing of electric vehicles (EVs) as well as for producing renewable energy products, and also in spacecraft and rockets.
For developing the new advanced materials for use on Earth and in space, Tesla and SpaceX have been building their respective Material Engineering teams.
In an inadvertent hint that the Tesla and Space X Material Engineering teams are interlinked, Tesla has “mistakenly” disclosed that the teams are referred to by Tesla recruiters as ‘SpaceX/Tesla Materials Engineering organization.’
The interlinking of the Material Engineering teams at Tesla and SpaceX seemingly started taking shape in late 2015, when Musk appointed tech giant Apple’s alloy expert Charles Kuehmann as the chief of Materials Engineering at both his companies at the same time.
Kuehmann has helped Tesla and SpaceX build significant teams of dozen of material engineers. Along with Kuehmann, another executive who has a foot in both of Musk’s companies is Computational materials scientist Maarten De Jong who, as per his LinkedIn profile, is working as Materials Engineer at both Tesla and SpaceX.
