Rivian’s upcoming delivery e-vans to carry straightforward names like 700 Van & 500 Van

American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian Automotive LLC’s upcoming delivery vans will carry straightforward names like 700 Van and 500 Van, a VIN document recently filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed.

According to new details about the fully-electric commercial vehicles that Rivian is going to deliver to e-commerce giant Amazon, the Irvine, California-headquartered manufacturer will name its upcoming commercial EVs as per their cargo capacity. Thus, the commercial vehicle with a cargo capacity of 700 cubic feet (19.8 cubic meters) will be named 700 Van; while the commercial vehicle with a cargo capacity of 500 cubic feet (14.1 cubic meters) will be named 500 Van.

Nothing has been mentioned about a 900 cubic foot (25.5 cubic meters) version of the electric van in the VIN document filed with the NHTSA, but the manufacturer previously indicated that it might produce and sell the larger version as well sometime in the future. In that case, the 900 cubic foot version would obviously be named the 900 Van. In simple words, the names of the two upcoming Rivian electric vans will represent their respective cargo capacities.

Earlier this year, the EV startup announced, “EDVs will be built in 500, 700, and 900 cubic feet sizes. The 500 and 700 are planned for launch in December 2021 and early 2022 respectively, and the 900 is planned thereafter.”

The Rivian 500 and 700 electric vans will reportedly offer a range of up to 150 miles (241 km) on a single charge; while the larger 900 Van will be capable of covering distances of up to 120 miles (193 km) per full charge.

Rivian has plans to make the 500 Van and 700 Van available in different trims, including S (Service) and Z (Amazon). The manufacturer is preparing to deliver the first 300 units of the electric vans to Amazon before the end of 2021. Rivian has signed an agreement with Amazon to deliver 100,000 electric vans to the e-commerce giant by the end of 2025, with the first 10,000 units to be delivered by the end of next year. Volume production is expected to start in December this year at the manufacturer’s Normal, Illinois-based manufacturing plant.

Information extracted from the VIN decoder also revealed that the Rivian 500 Van would be made available in left-hand and right-hand drive configurations, which means it could be rolled out in right hand drive (RHD) markets like Australia, Britain, and India.
