Report: Panasonic seeks new buyers, other than Tesla, for solar cells produced at Gigafactory 2
According to a Reuters report, Japanese electronics giant Panasonic is seeking new buyers, other than Tesla Motors, for the solar cells which it is producing at the Tesla’s Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, New York. The reason behind the move by Panasonic is that the ramp-up of solar roof tile production by Tesla at the Gigafactory has been quite slow.
The Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo is the factory which Tesla took over from SolarCity after the company’s acquisition. Tesla had signed a deal with Panasonic for producing solar cells for its solar roof tiles at the Gigafactory. The deal was similar to the one signed for Tesla Gigafactory 1, where the two companies produce batteries.
In 2017, Tesla signed another manufacturing agreement with Panasonic, for the acceleration of solar-cell production at Gigafactory 2.
In accordance with the agreement, Panasonic increased the production of solar cells at Gigafactory 2, but Tesla has been slow in ramping up its solar roof tile production for which the cells are used. As such, with the solar-cell production by Panasonic outpacing Tesla’s solar roof tile production, Panasonic is now reportedly looking for other buyers for its solar cells.
Towards that end, the Reuters report specifically said: “Repeated hold-ups since the Buffalo, New York plant opened last year have forced Tesla’s partner in the joint venture, Panasonic, to seek other buyers for the components it had built to sell to Tesla.”
