Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance releases impressive European EV sales numbers for H1 2018
The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has recently released its European electric-vehicle (EV) sales figures for the January-June 2018 period. The figures show that the EVs offered by Nissan and Renault are quite popular in Europe, despite the fact that Tesla is mostly known for producing EVs. Tesla has been trying to expand its network and reach in European markets in the recent quarters but the company has been involved in dealing with production issues with Model 3 as well in the US market.
According to the figures released by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the European EV sales among the member companies in the first six months of 2018 recorded an increase of 5.1 percent, as compared to the same period in 2017.
The figures have revealed that the Nissan LEAF emerged as the best-selling EV in Europe in 2018, with the total number of more than 47,000 LEAF units sold in the continent for the year-to-date.
The second and third best-selling EVs in Europe in the first half of 2018 were the Renault Zoe and Kangoo Z.E. all-electric vehicles, which accounted for 21.9 percent of all EV sales in Europe thus far this year. In the fourth spot was the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid, which is the market leader for PHEV SUVs.
However, in spite of the impressive EV sales figures reported by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance for Europe during the January-June 2018 period, it is pertinent to note that electric mobility in the continent is apparently hampered due to the lack of adequate charging infrastructure as well as the price and performance of EVs as compared to vehicles equipped with combustion engines.
In an announcement made this week, electric vehicles start-up SF Motors said that the company is investing $160 million in the former Hummer manufacturing plant in Indiana, for the production of all-electric SUVs at the plant.
