Progressive Conservatives to phase-out EV rebate program in Ontario
In Ontario, the incoming Progressive Conservatives government will phase out an existing electric-vehicle rebate program, under which rebates of up to $14,000 are available to consumers on the purchase of electric vehicles (EVs).
The Progressive Conservatives government, led by premier-designate Doug Ford, is scheduled for swearing-in on June 29, 2018.
The EV rebate program which the incoming PC government plans to scrap was established by the recently defeated Liberal government a few years back. The program applies to nearly 20 electric and hydrogen-fuelled models offered by 14 car manufacturers including Tesla Motors, BMW, Ford, and General Motors.
The key objective behind the EV rebate program by the Liberal government was to offer EV purchase incentives to motorists for giving an apparent kick-start to a switchover to low-emission vehicles. The funding for the EV purchase incentives partly comes from the cap-and-trade program.
About the future of the EV rebate program under Ford’s PC government, Jeff Silverstein -- spokesman for the premier-designate -- said on Wednesday: “Doug Ford has been clear that he is cancelling cap and trade and Kathleen Wynne’s climate change action plan.”
The statement by Silverstein clearly indicates that the Ford Conservatives’ government will be hitting the brakes on the EV rebate program. However, as of now, no deadline has been officially set by the incoming government for the phase-out of the EV rebate program.
