Nissan LEAF battery packs powering massive energy storage system at Dutch stadium

Electric vehicle manufacturers including Tesla Motors, Mercedes Benz and Nissan are also working on interesting energy storage projects. For a massive energy storage project supported by the Amsterdam Climate and Energy Fund (AKEF) and Interreg, the battery packs of Japanese automaker Nissan’s LEAF electric vehicle are now powering a huge new energy storage system at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Nissan has recently released some pictures of the deployment of the massive energy storage system at the Dutch stadium. The project marks another noteworthy effort in terms of the use of electric vehicle (EV) battery packs for stationary energy storage projects.

For the project, Nissan collaborated with Eaton, BAM, The Mobility House and the Johan Cruijff Arena, to install a 3 MW/2.8 MWh storage system which comprises battery modules from the equivalent of 148 battery packs of the Nissan LEAF EV.

The power for the large battery system deployed at the stadium will come from a solar installation which includes a total of 4,200 solar panels.

Describing the energy storage system at the Johan Cruijff Arena as the “the largest European energy storage system using second-life and new electric vehicle batteries in a commercial building,” Nissan said that the system will provide “a more reliable and efficient energy supply and usage for the stadium, its visitors, neighbors and the Dutch energy grid.”
