Nearly 290,000 applicants in Beijing are waiting to get car plates for NEVs
Chinese government offers subsidies for electric vehicle buyers and also uses tough regulations to press people to buy electric vehicles. The latest data released by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport on June 9, 2018, clearly shows that the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) in China has increased due to tough government regulations.
According to the data, the number of drivers having applied for a license to own an EV in China’s capital city of Berlin thus far in 2018 has already recorded a five-fold increase over the stipulated number allowed by the authorities for the year.
Specifically, as per the figures disclosed by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, almost 290,000 people who applied for a license to own a ‘new energy vehicle’ (NEV) -- an EV or a plug-in hybrid -- in Beijing this year are waiting to get a car plate.
With Beijing having an allowed quota of 54,000 car plates for 2018, local news outlet Beijing Youth Daily has revealed in a recent report that the number of applicants for a license to own an NEV in Beijing has already exceeded the 2018 quota by five times. The report also added that some applicants might have to wait for five years to get a car plate for their vehicle.
The dramatic surge in the popularity of EVs in China is a result of incentives -- such as tax rebates for EV buyers -- and the ongoing efforts by the authorities in Beijing to cut down sharply on new fossil fuel cars.
