In March 2018, new diesel cars sales in UK dropped by over one-third
According to recent data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the month of March 2018 recorded a fall in the demand for new diesel cars in the UK by more than one-third.
The data released by the industry body is important because March is generally the best-selling month of the year for cars.
Going by the SMMT data, the over one-third drop in the UK sales of new diesel cars this March resulted in a 15.7 percent fall in the number of total diesel car registrations in the country in the reporting month. In specific figures, total diesel car registrations in the UK in March 2018 stood at 474,069 vehicles, owing to a plunge in the demand among individual as well as business customers.
The drop in sales of diesel cars in the UK, and several other European countries, is a result of the crackdown by regulators on the diesel-car segment, in the form of bans, levies and additional taxes.
Highlighting the fact that the crackdown is aimed at prompting consumers to opt for auto technologies which can improve air quality for meeting climate change targets, SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said that “government must do more to encourage consumers to buy new vehicles rather than hang onto their older, more polluting vehicles.”
