Kia is planning to produce electric and hybrid vehicles at its upcoming facility in India
According to a recent disclosure by a top-rung executive at Kia Motors Corporation, the South Korean automaker has plans underway to produce electric and hybrid vehicles in India.
The disclosure about Kia’s plans has come from Kook Hyun Shim -- CEO and Managing Director of Kia Motors India -- during the course of a recent interview with PTI. Kia Motors India is the wholly-owned division of Kia Motors Corporation.
As per the information shared by Shim, Kia will be producing electric and hybrid vehicles in India, at its upcoming 23 million square feet manufacturing facility located at Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh. The automaker is targeting a 2021 timeline for the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) in the country.
Shim has revealed that Kia plans to mark its foray into the Indian market with the launch of three EV models by Kia Motors India in the next three years, beginning with SUV, SP Concept which was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo.
Shim added that Kia is planning to make a $1.1 billion investment at its Anantpur manufacturing facility which, when fully operational, will have the capacity to produce 3 lakh cars per year. With Kia already selling electrified cars in Europe and US market, Shim said: “We have all the technologies ready. We are very flexible at the moment (as far as India is concerned).”
