Hyundai’s Nexo FCEV --- a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell car
South Korean automaker Hyundai recently introduced its Nexo FCEV at the 2018 CES event. The car marked the next generation of hydrogen fuel cell cars, as it boasts some significant improvements over the old Tucson FCEV.
The Hyundai Nexo FCEV can yield a total output of 135 kW; with the fuel cell providing approximately 95 kW of power, and the battery providing 40 kW of power. The electric motor of the car is rated at 120 kW and 395 Nm.
The range of the Nexo FCEV is 370 miles on a single charge, which is comparatively much higher than the 265-mile range of the Tucson FCEV. In addition, the Nexo also boasts an improved acceleration and can achieve 0-60 mph in just 9.5 seconds, as compared to Tucson FCEV’s 0-60 mph acceleration in 12.5 seconds.
The Nexo FCEV is also an improvement over the Tucson FCEV in terms of lighter weight, additional cabin space, better layout of fuel cell system, and improved power-to-weight ratio. Overall, the Nexo is manufactured with a dedicated vehicle architecture, which gives it better power density and durability that is equivalent to gas-powered vehicles.
With the Nexo FCEV scheduled for launch in some markets towards the later part of 2018, Hyundai Motor Company’s Vice Chairman Dr. Woong-chul said, with regard to the automaker’s interest in the FCEV segment: “Hydrogen energy is the key to building a more sustainable society.”
