Ford may start manufacturing electric cars in Germany after 2023
In a recent interview with German business daily Handelsblatt, Gunnar Herrmann -- Ford’s head of German business -- said that Ford could commence the production of electric cars in Germany after the year 2023.
Drawing attention to the fact that the life cycle of the Ford Fiesta model is scheduled to come to an end in 2023, Herrmann said that as of now, it is “purely hypothetically” that the 2023 could be a good time for the automaker to start making electric cars in Germany.
Nonetheless, Herrmann also added alongside that Ford would welcome subsidies from the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia -- the state in which Ford’s Cologne plant is situated -- for supporting its switchover to the production of electric cars in the country.
Sharing some details about Ford’s proposed shift to manufacture electric cars in Germany, Herrmann said that the retooling of the automaker’s Cologne plant would probably take 15 months. He also added that it would not be feasible for Ford to make the investment if the yearly sales of electric cars touched only 30,000 or 40,000 vehicles.
Asserting that “today electric cars are not especially profitable yet,” Herrmann said that Ford’s investment on retooling at the Cologne plant would be possible “if the sales’ numbers are moving up more powerfully.”
