Elon Musk: Tesla vehicle security software could be open-sourced for free to other automakers

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the automaker is planning to open-source its vehicle security software to other auto manufacturers, for free.
The move being planned by Tesla Motors is apparently aimed at ensuring a safer self-driving future, especially in the wake of the potential hacking risk resulting from the imminent rise of self-driving vehicles as well as more connected vehicles which rely on computers.
In disclosing Tesla’s plans to open-source its vehicle security software to other auto manufacturers, Musk said that one of Tesla’s top priorities is to avert a ‘fleet-wide hack.’ Musk also expressed concerns about the past hacking attempts aimed at gaining access to Tesla’s vehicle security system.
According to the details shared by Musk about Tesla’s vehicle security software, a “specialized encryption” has been developed by the automaker for “multiple sub-systems” in the vehicle. In addition, the automaker is also developing a capability for drivers to “override authority” in case something “wacky” is being done by their self-driving vehicle.
With Tesla already being quite efficient at fixing vulnerabilities -- reported regularly by whitehat hackers and security researchers -- in its system via over-the-air software updates, Musk is of the opinion that Tesla’s vehicle security software is the best solution which should be open-sourced for other automakers.
