Electrify America's “Boost Plan” aims to more than double EV charging network by 2025

Electrify America, a Volkswagen Group subsidiary that operates a large DC fast charging network for electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States, has announced plans to more than double its charging infrastructure in North America. Set up in 2016 by Volkswagen as part of its efforts to offset carbon emissions in the wake of the notorious emissions scandal, Electrify America is one of the largest operators of DC fast charging network for EVs in the United States and Canada, with more than 500 charging locations and as many as 2,200 individual charging points.

Now, it is working on a “Boost Plan” with an aim to expand the network to the extent of nearly 1,800 fast-charging stations, with around 10,000 charging points by 2025. Previously, the operator had announced plans to install nearly 800 charging stations with a total of 3,500 individual charging points in the U.S. by the end of current year. In the latest plan, it aims to increase the total number of charging stations to nearly 1,800 locations with 9,500 individual charging points by the end of 2025.

Electrify America CEO Giovanni Palazzo said, “We have decided to double our current charging infrastructure in North America over the next four years to help meet the need for the rapid growth expected of electric vehicles by virtually all the auto manufacturers, and to help make EV adoption more accessible and attractive than ever.”

Announcing the plan, Palazzo stressed that the company remained committed to support American and Canadian governments’ goals to electrify the entire transportation system.

EV giant Tesla Motors also has its own superfast EV charging stations. Currently, it has a network of slightly more than 1,200 superchargers in the U.S. Thus, Electrify America’s plan to install nearly 1,800 charging locations will take it ahead of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based EV pioneer in terms of charging infrastructure. But, one should not ignore the fact that Tesla is also working to expand its own EV charging network. Many more players are also expected to enter the arena, thanks to the push being given by governments around the globe to accelerate the ongoing transition from conventional internal combustion engines to EVs.

As part of its expansion plans, Electrify America will play special attention to a number of new U.S. regions, including the states of Hawaii, West Virginia, Wyoming, Vermont, North Dakota, and South Dakota. With the addition of the few new states to the list, the company’s network will expand to 49 states across the United States.
