Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to provide EV charge points at street lights
In a move which marks a notable attempt by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs), a pilot project has been initiated by the council for using street lamps as EV charge points. A similar move has been tried in London as well and a Germany-based firm Ubitricity is working on the project.
Under the pilot project, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is initially setting up a street lamp on Crofton Road, near the railway station, to serve as a charging point for EVs. As a result of the move, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown will become the first local authority to make a provision of EV charge points on street lamps.
The pilot project launched by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is on the lines of pilot projects started in Germany, where EV charge points have been provided in street lamps on the sides of the roads.
The pilot use of street lamps as EV charging points by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is a unique solution for potential EV owners who live in houses where it is not feasible to install charging points. These houses may include apartment blocks where parking is at a distance from electricity supplies; or terraced houses which do not have driveways or front gardens, and would require the cables to be stretched across footpaths.
With regard to pilot use of street lamps for EV charging, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said that it would also consider “options for additional installing electric charge points in the public realm and in the car parks that we own.”
