Audi e-tron quattro electric SUV gets 30% range enhancement through regenerative braking
German automaker Audi has revealed that it has been able to achieve a range enhancement of 30% for its forthcoming e-tron quattro electric SUV through regenerative braking, and has also put it to test.
The latest information about the e-tron quattro electric SUV has been disclosed by Audi a few weeks ahead of its scheduled unveiling of the vehicle’s production version in San Francisco in September 2018. The electric SUV will likely hit production by the end of 2018.
According to the details shared by Audi, the range of the e-tron quattro SUV is now rated at “more than 400 kilometers (248.5 mi)” in the WLTP test cycle.
Audi has revealed that regenerative braking can result in the addition of power back for the e-tron quattro at a rate of 220 kW, thereby marking a virtual addition of 1 km of range for every kilometre which the vehicle travels downhill. As per Audi, the improved range has been achieved by combining the e-tron quattro’s powerful dual motor powertrain with a new first-of-its-kind electrohydraulic actuation braking concept.
After putting the regenerative braking theory to the test at Pikes Peak in Colorado, Audi said: “The Audi e-tron prototype recuperates energy with up to 300 Nm of torque (221.3 lb-ft) and 220 kW of electric power – more than 70 percent of its operating energy input. No series production model has achieved such a value up to now.”
